Notebooks, laptops and tablets are becoming very popular choices for first time computer buyers, as well as geeks everywhere. But the costs of a high-end laptop can skyrocket your wallet right through the roof. Are there cheap laptops under 300 dollars, that are actually good quality?
You bet there are.
HP Mini Netbooks
HP has stepped up their game with the release of their new HP Mini Netbook series of laptops. These small laptops make great choices for strong computing power, with the convenience of low space requirements.
There are many models available for under $300.00 that make great laptops for students, and have even been given away as free laptops for low income families.
While they may not make the best gaming platforms, they do everything else quite well, and have enough power to run most applications you’d like.
For example, the HP Mini 110-3130nr netbook has an Intel Atom 1.66 GHz processor, with a 10.1 inch LCD screen. It also has 1 GB of RAM and a 250 GB hard drive standard, and is priced under $300. The HP Mini 5103, in comparison, has a few more bells and whistles, and is priced at just over $300.
This HP Mini 110 netbook series is really great for those who are into traveling, because of the integrated wireless technology, and the Windows 7 Starter operating system. The integrated WebCam also makes it a great machine to stay in contact with anyone you need while you are traveling.
If you’re looking for a slightly beefier system within the same price range, you should take a look at the HP Mini 210 netbook, which offers similar features, but the 10.1 inch display is HD compatible.
The battery life on both of these netbook is quite high, with up to almost 11 hours from a single charge.
In the end, the HP Mini 1000 laptops make great computers with a great value.
The one downfall to be given to HP computers is that they are, according to warranty surveys done by the industry, the computer company that is most likely to encounter hardware faults at the user end level.
While their fail rate is still reasonable, at 25%, which includes hardware fails directly, as well as user errors, it is still something to bear in mind while you’re looking for your next system.
Toshiba Laptops and Mini Netbooks
Have you been thinking about getting one of those new fancy Toshiba laptops, but are afraid of the price tag? You are in luck; Toshiba has a line of nice laptops for you.
Toshiba has been known for their quality small laptops and the used models are no exception. They are thoroughly checked over by the manufacturer and they ensure everything works perfectly before it leaves their site.
Some models are even available with free shipping and handling.
Toshiba also holds the distinction of being one of the most reliable laptop brands, in surveys done by warranty providers.
Gaming laptops are also available for this low price, and make great choices for the whole family.
Great examples of Toshiba laptops under $300 are the Portege line and the Satellite line, both of which offer high usability, great portability, and a lot of power in a small package. Combined with the reliability of Toshiba, one of these would take you a long way.
Acer Laptops
The Acer Aspire One has been a popular shopping choice since it was first released, and models are now available from the manufacturer at prices under 300 dollars.
An example of what you can get in an Acer laptop under $300 is the Acer Aspire One AO531H-1440, which has an Intel Atom 1.66 GHz processor, and a 160 GB hard drive. It also has 1 GB of RAM, which is upgradable.
Other Acer Aspire netbooks to look at would be the Acer Aspire One AO531H-1766, the Acer Aspire One AOD250-1962 Netbook and the Acer Aspire One AOD250-1924 Netbook.
Any of these laptops under $300 would be a great fit for business people, travelers, and students. They also make great pieces of hardware for the general computer user.
On the reliability scale, Acer fits right in the middle of all the competitors, which means that you can buy one with confidence.
Some models are refurbished, while other new laptop models are rolling off the shelves right now. There has never been a better time to pick up one of these quality laptops.
Asus Laptops and Asus Netbooks
Asus, like Toshiba, sits as king of the reliability factor, with the lowest amount of fill rates in warranty surveys.
And, as luck would have it, there are many Asus laptops available under $300.
The Asus Eee PC 1005HAB Netbook, like many of the others here, contain the Intel Atom N270, with a 1.66 GHz speed. You’ll also find a 150 GB hard drive, which is plenty of space for the Windows operating system that comes standard, and any software applications you want to run.
Within the Asus category of laptop computers under $300, you’ll also find the Asus Eee 1000 PC, the Asus Eee pc 1215n netbook, and Asus Eee PC 1005 series. All of these contain similar features, with some being upgraded in certain areas.
All of the Asus EEE netbooks are highly reliable, and offer great portability with no compromise on quality.
Dell Mini Netbook and Dell Mini Laptop
The Dell Mini Inspiron series within this price range contains the Dell Mini 9, the Dell Mini 3 and the Dell Mini 10v.
Dell has been looked upon by many of its customers as being a very reliable provider of laptop computers. The warranty surveys conducted by the industry hold this to be true, with Dell coming in third place, behind Toshiba and Asus. Given that fact, the purchase of a Dell Mini laptop would serve you well as far as reliability is concerned.
Within this series of mini notebooks, you’ll find very similar features to the rest. This is, quite frankly, because the hardware within this type of laptop is cheap for the manufacturers to purchase. This does include Dell, as well.
So, within one of these laptops, you’ll find the Intel atom processor, and a hard drive size of around 150 GB. 1 GB of RAM is also common.
Again, however, the advantage with Dell is that the reliability is high.
Used Laptops for Sale
Of course, one route that you can go is to buy a used laptop, either from an online retailer or a shop near you. This is a great choice, since you can generally get great computing power from a low price, especially as college students are able to buy new models from school, and sell off their older models.
You will find they are of great quality and have passed all the tests, when you buy from a reputable dealer.
So, stop worrying that you will not be able to find a quality laptop under 300 dollars. They are available, now more than ever, and you would do well to grab one while you can. As the market expands and more people discover that they can get good deals on these laptops, they will disappear before your eyes.
Even the notoriously expensive Apple is getting involved in the market.
Our Personal Choices
Our personal favorite choice is a Toshiba model, since the manufacturer gives free shipping options, and we can usually get great gaming laptops for the price.
Toshiba and Asus also hold the distinction of being the most reliable laptop manufacturers, according to surveys done by warranty providers.
Because of these reasons, we would definitely buy Toshiba or Asus laptops again, and even the new tablets that they are releasing in 2011. It will be possible very soon to find a tablet under 300 dollars.
There’s never been a better time than now to get moving with a laptop.
Things to Understand When Looking For A Laptop Under $300
The misconception with laptops is that they have to be expensive pieces of equipment to buy. While this is true for the high-end gaming laptops out there, it does not have to be.
The problem that most people have when looking for a new laptop, and are searching for one under $300, is that they go into it with expectations too high.
Let’s face it, laptop hardware is very expensive. Developments in hardware technology push the price up, making those gaming laptops spoken about well over $1500 in price. However, this is because they have the latest graphic card technology, huge hard drives, and processors that have been overclocked to the limits.
For a laptop under $300, you should expect to find common features that are scaled down from there. After all, the most expensive pieces of equipment to go into a laptop deal with the graphics, screen size, and hard drive space.
So, to push the price down, the manufacturers will install smaller screen sizes, which are typically 10.1 inches to 12 inches in size, hard drives no larger than 150 GB, and graphics that are integrated into the motherboard. It is also common to find that there is no optical drive installed.
However, external DVD drives and Blu-Ray drives for computers are not expensive to purchase. These add-ons will allow you to get the laptop at a low price.
There’s also misconceptions that refurbished laptops are somehow lower quality than if they were brand-new. This is simply not the case.
A refurbished laptop, for instance, will have its hardware thoroughly checked out before it leaves the manufacturer, and any damaged equipment or dirty equipment will be cleaned up or replaced.
If you are looking for a laptop, and are stuck to a budget, a great way to save money when buying your laptop is to determine what your needs are before you purchase.
Knowing ahead of time what features you can and cannot live without will help you to find the best price.
In the end, however, there has never been a better time than now to buy a laptop, and you should take advantage of the prices and great systems available.
